Example 8AM AQ Performance stats since strategy launch

These bar charts compare the long-term performance of our two flagship strategies since their respective launches, grouped by risk strategy:

Balanced portfolios (5/10 risk | 55%-60% equity)
Growth portfolios (7/10 risk | 75%-80% equity)

What you’re seeing:

AQ Classic (orange): Launched June 2020, our original risk-targeted strategy.
AQ Global (red): Launched 2024, using the same fund selections as Classic but mapped retroactively to global market cap weightings (2020–present).
IA Sector (grey): IA Mixed Asset Sector Benchmark

Key Takeaway: This data highlights the total excess returns generated for our clients through a systematic, data-led, and dispassionate approach to alpha generation.

Timeframe: 30 June 2020 – 31 December 2024

AQ Rolling 12-month sector hit rate & Cumulative Performance

For 8+ years, we’ve systematically tracked two metrics:

  • How often AQ-chosen funds beat their sector average (hit rate)
  • The compounded value this adds over time (cumulative performance)

Methodology:

  • Measures real-time historic decisions – only using funds actually selected by AQ since 2016
  • Excludes any back-tested ‘improvements’ (no retrospective amendments)

What you’re seeing:

Blue graph: % Rolling 12 month AQ fund selection win-rate per sector
Grey line: % base 50% random hit rate – or “pot luck”

Key Takeaways:

  1. This data quantifies the likelihood of AQ-selected funds outperforming their respective benchmarks over any 12-month window.
  2. This data shows the potential cumulative outperformance of each sector over the period 2016-2024.

Timeframe: 2016 to year end 2024

Risk vs Return Scatter Charts

We’ve created two scatter charts comparing the long-term performance of our AQ Classic and AQ Global portfolios against all IA Mixed Asset sector members.

What you’re seeing:

Scatter 1 = AQ Classic (orange): Launched June 2020, our original risk-targeted strategy.
Scatter 2 = AQ Global (red): Launched 2024, using the same fund selections as Classic but mapped retroactively to global market cap weightings (2020–present).

Scatter 1&2 = IA Sectors (grey/dark grey/black): IA Mixed Asset Sector Constituents

Key Takeaways:

  1. Notice how AQ Global delivers enhanced returns through a direct, linear increase in volatility and beta compared to AQ Classic.
  2. This visually reinforces the standard risk-reward dynamic.
  3. While AQ Global offers potential for higher returns, this comes with increased concentration, potentially impacting volatility and downside risk, especially over shorter time frames.

Timeframe: 30 June 2020 – 31 December 2024

Scatter chart showing the stability of 8AM AQ Classic relative to benchmark members

We’ve analysed the discrete annual performance and volatility data for the AQ Classic range against all IA Mixed Asset sector members.

What you’re seeing:

AQ Classic (orange): Launched June 2020, our original risk-targeted strategy.
IA Sector Members (grey/dark grey/black): IA Mixed Asset Sector Constituents

Key Takeaways:

  1. 2020; Our methodology delivered significant outperformance.
  2. 2022; Our portfolios’ 10% drawdown, while in line with the sector, was achieved through transparent defensive positioning.
  3. In all other years, AQ Classic consistently sits in the upper left of the risk-return distribution, without taking excessive active risk.

Timeframe: Discrete calendar years and “since launch” (30 June 2020 – 31 December 2024)

The investment team targets long-term outperformance, achieved via a robust, data-driven approach to asset allocation and fund selection. We effectively manage short-term relative risk using transparent allocation rulesets, combined with AQ fund monitoring technology to achieve consistent, relative alpha generation over the longer term.
